Before a large grill ships, confirm five things from the seller's own pages: how long you have to return it and who pays freight, whether a restocking charge applies, what to do if it arrives damaged, how it will be delivered, and who assembles it. Then inspect the delivery before the driver leaves and open the cartons soon after.

These steps matter any time you buy a grill online, and especially when a holiday sale has you deciding fast. If you are still comparing models, start with our checklist for comparing grills on sale and come back here before you pay.

Bottom line

Screenshot the return and delivery terms on the day you order. At the door, count pieces, write every visible problem on the paperwork before you sign, and photograph everything. Windows for reporting damage are short and differ by seller and carrier, so find yours instead of assuming.

Read the return policy for large items

General store policies often have a separate section for bulky goods, and that section is the one that applies to a grill. Find it on the seller's page and write down the answers to these questions. If the page does not answer one, ask the seller before buying and keep the reply.

QuestionWhy it matters
When does the window start?Counting from the order date, the ship date or the delivery date can change how many days you really have.
What condition is required? Some sellers want items unused, unassembled and in original packaging. Assembling or lighting a grill may end your return rights.
Who pays return freight?A heavy item may need a pickup or a freight booking. Learn who arranges it and who pays before you commit.
Is there a restocking charge?Find out whether it applies to every return or only to some reasons, and whether it applies when the item arrives damaged.
How is the refund issued? To the original payment method or as store credit, and how long it takes after the item is received.
Who is the seller?A marketplace seller's terms can differ from the platform's. Check the name next to "sold by".

No window lengths or fees are quoted here because they differ by seller and can change. What you can control is having the current terms in hand.

Save the terms and the promise

On order day, screenshot the product page, the shipping estimate, the return policy and your order confirmation. The FTC's mail-order rule says a seller that states a shipping time must have a reasonable basis for it, and where no time is stated the default is shipment within thirty days of a properly completed order. A seller that cannot ship on time has to offer you the choice of agreeing to a delay or cancelling for a prompt refund.

The rule also covers the other side. Refunds on a cancelled order are due within a set period after cancellation, and sellers cannot substitute store credit for a refund you are owed. Your screenshots show what was promised when you paid.

Know how it ships and who carries it

A boxed grill and a pallet shipment are different experiences. Ask or look for how the carton travels, whether delivery is to the curb, driveway or garage, and whether the driver will help. A grill carton is awkward even when it is not heavy, so plan the route in advance: doors, steps, the gap between car and patio, and a second adult.

Check the shipping weight and carton size on the listing against your route, rather than guessing. A hand truck rated for the shipping weight is cheap insurance against dropping the box on a step.

Check the rating against the shipping weight on the listing, and look for straps and stair-climbing wheels or runners if your route has steps.

At the door: the damaged-freight checklist

Guidance from a freight company and seller receiving instructions point to the same sequence. Do it while the driver is there:

  1. Count pieces against the delivery receipt, and confirm the labels match what you ordered.
  2. Look at every carton. Tears, holes, stains, water marks, opened packaging, altered tape and cut pallet wrap are all worth noting.
  3. Photograph the shipment while it is being unloaded, including the labels and any damage.
  4. Write each problem on the delivery receipt, even small ones, and ask the driver to witness it. Failing to note damage makes a later claim harder.
  5. Do not sign clean if something looks wrong. A clean signature says the goods arrived without noticeable damage, and the carrier can point to it.

Whether to refuse a damaged shipment is a question for the seller. One freight guide advises accepting visibly damaged freight and noting it, because refusal can add costs, but your seller's instructions come first. If you can, ask in writing before delivery day what the seller wants you to do.

Open it soon: concealed damage and missing parts

A carton can look perfect and hold a dented lid or a missing burner. That is concealed damage, and the reporting window is short. One freight seller's receiving instructions ask buyers to open and inspect every item and report problems within three business days. A freight company's guide gives a different number, so do not rely on either one. Read your own seller's terms and report quickly.

Lay the parts out and count them against the parts list in the manual. Look at the lid, firebox or body panels, cooking grates, burners or fuel parts, hardware bags and the cart. Photograph any problem with the packaging next to it, and keep all packaging until the seller says the case is closed.

Hold off on assembly until the count is done. Depending on the seller, assembling the grill can complicate a return.

Assembly and the first-use safety check

Follow the manual's assembly steps in order, with a second pair of hands for the heavy ones. Edges on sheet metal can be sharp, so wear work gloves while you build. For a gas grill, the manual's gas connection and leak-check procedure takes priority over any general advice. As one example, a city fire department page describes brushing soap and water on the gas hose before first use each year and watching for bubbles; if there is a leak, shut off the tank and the grill, and have a professional service the grill before you use it. Never light a grill you suspect is leaking.

Look for a snug fit that still lets you handle small screws. They are for building the grill, not for handling hot grates.

Frequently asked questions

How long do I have to return a grill bought online?

There is no single answer. The seller sets the window, and large items can follow different rules from small ones. Read the policy for bulky goods on the seller's page and screenshot it on the day you order.

What if the carton looks fine but the grill is damaged inside?

That is concealed damage. Open and inspect everything soon after delivery, photograph problems with the packaging, keep the cartons and report to the seller within its stated window. Some sellers give very few days.

Should I refuse a delivery with a damaged carton?

Ask the seller what it wants before delivery day. One freight guide advises accepting visibly damaged freight and noting every problem on the receipt, because refusing can add costs, but the seller's instructions take priority.

Can I return a grill after I assemble it?

Some sellers accept only unused, unassembled items in original packaging, and some charge restocking fees. Check the policy before you open the hardware bags.

What can I do if my grill ships late?

Under the FTC's mail-order rule, a seller that cannot meet its shipping date must offer you the choice of agreeing to a delay or cancelling for a prompt refund. Keep your order confirmation.

No return-window, restocking or fee figures are quoted, because each seller sets its own. Carrier claim deadlines also vary, so read your seller's and carrier's terms. For gas connections and leak checks, follow your grill's manual and a qualified technician.
